"My son has had low muscle tone since birth and finding a sport that he enjoys was a challenge before we met Colin and Sam. He needed confidence and as he was only 3 when he started something that was fun, while at the same time building his muscles and core strength. Colin and Sam at JMA taught martial arts with a mix of fun activities aswell eg stranger danger, healthy eating, what to do in an emergency by knowing address and phone number, social skills, respect for himself and others. JMA was fantastic but he also gained two mentors that have helped him believe he CAN do anything he puts his mind too. I have never met two
people so dedicated to there job by being there for our kids. They really care about the kids. He is now nearly 7 and still enjoying his martial arts as much as the 1st day he started. JMA has improved my sons life! It has improved his confidence and the best part is he really enjoys it. At 7 his goal is to help Colin and Sam teach when he is older! Thanks Colin, Sam and all JMA staff."
"JMA is my happy place. It is the place where the burdens of everyday life
can be left behind and I can focus my energy in a challenging, fun, constructive and satisfying way. Since I began training at JMA I have become a much more confident and happier person. I have met some amazing people and made some really good mates. Most importantly, the coaches are incredible! Besides being ninjas, they cater and adapt to everyone’s learning and training style, ensuring you walk out the door every time with something new and feeling positive."
Training at joondalup martial arts has made a massive impact on my life, both physically and as a person. I am more confident in situations and whenever I've had a hard day I know I've got training at the end of it to take the stress away and you guys are always there to listen to me and give me advice as well as all the awesome people that train at JMA it's like 1 big family. It took you guys only 2 years to train me and give me the confidence to get in that cage and fight best thing I ever did apart from joining the JMA family.
Both my chidren have been doing taekwondo for over 2 years with Colin and Sam. They have shown nothing but passion and personal interest in the development of my children. When we started at JMA they were both very shy and timid and they are now confident and passionate little people. They are eager to attend the classes and they both hold utmost respect for both Colin and Sam. I would highly recommend JMA to anyone who is concerned about the welbeing of their child as JMA teaches discipline, self defence as well as respect. My children are focused and aim high and JMA supports their needs, through encouragment and recognition.
I have trained with Colin Luthwood and Sam Moland since 2009 and during that time I found that I have physically and mentally developed in ways that would never be possible without their guidance. Tae Kwon Do offers many great challengers and will always have you doing thingsthat you never thought possible. Both Colin an Sam offer a friendly environment that is supportive to all members train and not just the elite few. Joondalup Martial Arts has assisted me with many goals personally one of which helping me me lose over 25kgs in the last 3 years. I now find myself more confident in my apperance and have a far better quality of life to enjoy with my family. My son first started training with Colin and Sam when he was four and they provided him a friendly safe and highly educational environment to learn Martial Arts. He has also continued his training and we notice a huge difference in his behaviour at home and at school. Martial Arts have provided him with structure and the understanding of not only respecting his instructors but his friends and family. I would highly recommend Joondalup Martial Artsas one of the best training environments and will continue to train with such great mentors.
Dear Colin and Sam,
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your hard work,
time, commitment, love and compassion towards our most prized possession’s -OUR three wonderful KIDS! Our kids enjoy the physical exercise. They exercise their whole body from top to toe and gain all round physical fitness; they want to keep coming back for more! For my young son especially enjoys the tough physical training which allows him to let off steam. They love kicking and punching under controlled conditions, but they also learn about self-control and how taekwondo has to stay in the Dojang. They learn from great role models. Being fit and healthy which gives our girls a positive body image. We have found through this training our children in taekwondo have become physically and mentally stronger which helps them in daily life. We have found the mental training. In taekwondo which they learn complicated movements which have helped their concentration and memory and they have learned to coordinate their bodies. Our Children in taekwondo have learned discipline. They learn to do as they are asked and they gain the self-discipline to keep going when training is tough.
The link between home life and Taekwondo is strong and the behavior management is similar to what any good parent would want and do for their child. We have found Colin and Sam have given and taught our children these five important skills for life-
Enhanced self-esteem by heightening their physical and mental powers.
Build confidence by encouraging all three of our kids to succeed
and to take control of their life.
Develop discipline by thoroughly training their bodies and mind in
the tenets and techniques of Taekwondo.
Teach self-defense by training them to recognize situations in
which physical self-defense may be necessary, and teaching them how to control such situations to their advantage.
Strengthen their mind and body through increased physical coordination and mental discipline.
We as a family respect and trust both Colin and Sam with our children and teaching them to look after themselves in the world. We have found their open communication fantastic, which we believe, are foundations of strong families. Taekwondo training at JOONDALUP MARTIAL ARTS promotes values such as honesty, courtesy, loyalty, and cooperation. Each is an essential component in maintaining a good family structure for us which works.
Our children’s overall health and well being of our children have been great since they have been going which is three years they are never sick and maintain optimal health which I credit taekwondo and a good healthy diet. My Twins are interested in competition, and both Colin and Sam work hard to teach them to become champions they wish to be and enhance their leadership qualities and let them be these amazing twins that we know they are. JMA also see our twins love to fight and this has lead them to join an amazing sports class which is lead by a fantastic teacher Luis, who both Jasmir and Symba adore and look up to, he runs a fast paced lesson which works on their strengths for competition fighting. Our oldest Daughter is interested in working on her leadership skills which has lead her to become a Junior instructor she enjoys coming to relieve stress and anxiety built up from the pressures of everyday life, she wants to be able to defend her selves, and wants regular exercise schedule to Limber up, build stamina and strength, which she gets from Joondalup Martial Arts. I have found their philosophy ensures that learning will take place in a safe, nurturing environment. Both Colin and Samcare about our children, students and staff, and we believe they provide supportive environment for learning and personal growth.
We are very happy at JMA and would highly
recommend this school.

I joined JMA in the opening weeks, with much fear and trepidation thinking I’d just go and see how it panned out – this unfit, over 40, mother of 2, who had hung up her uniform and TKD belt years before for travel, then work and children…. Now a few years later I can say I am fitter, happier, so much stronger and have truly reignited a passion that I thought had passed me by. Early in my training I was diagnosed with an illness – but my training has helped me deal with it not just on a physical but mental level as well. I love it so much I have enrolled my children in the TKD classes as well and now we are a family at JMA as much as JMA is like a family to us. The club is so welcoming and friendly and very much a case of ego’s left at the door – if you want to get into tournament fighting that’s there, if you just want to get fit and challenge yourself that’s there too. My favourite part of JMA though is the camaraderie across all the areas, there is no “us and them” ; Kickboxers, TaeKwonDo students, Box and Burners, Kids TKD and Tigers - we are ALL JMA and we all do it because we love it.Colin and Sam should be beyond proud of the amazing club they have developed and watching JMA grow, and I’m honoured to be a part of it has been a truly rewarding experience.
I have been a member of Joondalup Martial Arts for over two years and plan to be a member for many more years to come! During my first class I was warmly welcomed into this positive and energetic environment and immeidiately knew this was the perfect place to exercise. At first JMA was a place I went to exercise while meeting new people, however I now go to JMA to see my friends while keeping fit. Joondalup Martial Arts has become a family to me where I feel confident and cared for. Instantly when I enter the gym I feel cheerful and when I leave I stay feeling rejuvenated for hours. I love the Box and Burn morning classes on Wenesdays and Fridays as I feel "buzzed" for the rest of the day. Colin and Sam are not just my instructors but I am very pleased to call them my friends. Ever since I started they have become mentors in my life, always listening and offering advice. I joined JMA during year twelve, which is the most hectic time period, however I found that Box and Burn always de-stressed me and made me feel positive about life. Colin and Sam both offered me their complete support and encouragement, which has continued to this day. Both always have a smile for everyone that enters the gym, which is the key charm to why JMA is such an enjoyable place to be. I have noticed a massive difference in my fitness levels and all round wellbeing since I began at JMA. After commencing a class I feel energitic and my body feels great. I feel that Joondalup Martial Arts cares about the wellbeing of every one of their members and this shows by the amount of smiles in the gym. To me Joondalup Martial Arts is more than a gym, it's a family which continues to welcome new members. I honestly believe that joining JMA was one of the best decisions of my life as it has affected me in such a positive way. I am forever thankful to Colin and Sam who founded Joondalup Martial Arts as I truely love it!
